Some Day on Quilts Workshop - Virtual

Some Day on Quilts Workshop - Virtual

Date & Time

Saturday, October 17, 2026

10:30 AM – 5:30 PM GMT-2:30

Introduction

“Some Day on Quilts” is inspired by Newfoundland weather and memories of a line full of homemade quilts airing out on a summer's day. The house depicted is a fabric representation of a house at The Cribbies in Tors Cove, NL.

The Project

This full day workshop is for confident beginner quilters. The techniques explored in this workshop include fabric collage, raw-edge applique, mini piecing, the design process, and walking foot quilting. The project is a 40” x 50” wall hanging.

The pattern is included in the cost of the workshop and will be mailed out to participants via Canada Post at least two weeks before workshop date. You will need this pattern in order to participate as it has the full sized templates required for the project. If you already have the pattern, we suggest you gift the one you will receive in the mail or sell it. There will be no "reduced" workshop fees for participants who already have purchased the pattern. Sorry, but that would be a logistical nightmare to keep track of. We appreciate your understanding.

Participants should be able to thread their machines, wind a bobbin and sew a straight line in order to take the class.

Required Materials

You will need

-         1.35 meters of white cotton fabric cut into 20 – 10.5” x 10.5” squares and sewn together to make the background (see homework below).

-         Scraps in various shades of white and/or beige (including prints and solids); scraps in various shades of whatever colour you would like to use for the trim of the house (the example shows a red trim); scraps in browns for the clothesline pole; and scraps of black for windows/roof.

-         Scraps of fabric to make three mini quilts (bring extra in case you want to experiment).

-         1 fat quarter of solid light gray fabric

-         0.25 meters of binding (choose a colour that coordinates with your quilt top)*

-         1.5 meters of backing fabric (regular width ~ 42”)*

-         44” x 54” batting*

-         1.5 meters of applique adhesive (e.g., Steam a Seam is preferred as it is repositionable)

-         erasable pens, rotary cutter, scissors, ruler(s), sewing machine, thread (white, light gray, black, dark brown), ¼” foot and walking foot for your machine.

* We will not get to the binding, batting or backing so you do not need to worry about having these with you on the day of the workshop, unless you have questions about your choices and then I’d be happy to help.

Cutting Instructions:

1.     From the white fabric, cut 20 - 10.5” x 10.5” squares.

HOMEWORK to be completed BEFORE the workshop:

-         Sew the white 10.5” x 10.5” squares together in pairs. Press seams open.

-         Sew two pairs together so that you have a row of four squares. Press seams open. You should now have 5 rows with 4 squares in each row.

-         Sew these 5 rows together so that you end up with a rectangle that is 4 squares long by 5 squares wide. Press all seams open.

A note about this step: I realize that it seems foolish to cut up the white fabric only to sew it all back together again, however, there are several reasons why I ask you to do this. First, it allows me to teach you about perspective, the rule of thirds, and designing your own projects. Secondly, it is a quilt and the patchwork look of the background emphasizes that it is a quilt. Finally, it allows you to match up your grid lines with the ones on the tracing template you will receive in the workshop. Thanks for your cooperation and understanding. I am looking forward to workshopping with you all.
